Self-Care Things I Do When I’m Anxious

Following on from an earlier post, I wanted to share some self-care steps I take when anxiety affects my mind, body, and life.

Anxiety can come and go whenever it pleases, triggers or no. It can rock you or your boat a little, but sometimes it totally capsizes the damn thing. Here are some examples of self-care things I incorporate into my routine when my depression and anxiety are especially present in my life. These can be mixed together or done individually, it’s up to you and how you feel energetically.

  • Breathing exercises
  • Watch speed-paint videos on YouTube
  • Cuddle and talk to a loved one
  • Leave the room or go outside for a walk
  • Light a candle
  • Take a bath – preferably with a bath bomb
  • Read my favourite book
  • Grab a yummy snack
  • Curl up in my safe space
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Open the window
  • Do some light yoga exercises
  • Colour or doodle
  • Bake
  • Take time off work (this is a tough one for me)
  • Clean the house (if I have the energy)
  • Watch my favourite movies or shows
  • Write

  1. I like this list, I do some of those things too. Nice post!

  2. A lot of these sound familiar to me. Most of the time, when I’m desperately in need of self-care, I’m also in need of me-time which means the first step is kicking my boyfriend out for a couple of hours – or preferably an entire night / day. That alone already helps me getting back some of my energy because then I can focus on me and what I want to do, without the temptation of trying to care for others – if that makes sense?

    1. That absolutely makes sense! I would kick my partner out too, but he goes out of his own volition a lot so I don’t usually have to go there. What else do you like doing for self-care?

      1. Ha, mine doesn’t really. He likes being at home more than going out. A real gamer, sort of speak.
Hm, honestly depends on what mood I’m in. Sometimes I get cleaning, or take a ridiculously long shower (I’ll be so happy once we’ve moved and have a bath!). Or I end up baking. Baking relaxes me as well, even though I can’t eat a lot of sugary stuff. My colleagues are always happy when I’ve had a baking-spree.
